Around one century ago, Otto Warburg, well-known German physiologist, discoveredthat cancer cells are addicted to sugar.

Normal cells depend on oxygen for their growth. Cancer cells, however, grow bydevouring large amounts of glucose, even in an oxygen-rich environment. Thisphenomenon occurs in as many as 80 percent of cancers.

The metabolic way cancer cells use sugar as an energy source is called glycolyticmetabolism. This phenomenon is known as the Warburg effect.

“PD-1 Blockade in Mismatch Repair—Deficient, Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer,” was conducted among12 rectal cancer patients, all of whom had a “clinical complete response,” according to the authors, led by Dr. AndreaCercek of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
